What does the Recruitment Industry do, or not do, to encourage ethnic minorities?
Wednesday, 23 August 2006
The recruitment industry is bound by race discrimination legislation in the same way as every other industry is, but one thing it does do is educate its clients on that legislation. We had one example recently where a client asked for a British passport holder with English as a mother tongue. We had to tell them that they couldn't say that - you can only say that you want someone who is eligible to work in the UK and speaks fluent English (if it's a necessary requirement for the job).
So it's all about educating the clients. I put all our new starters through courses on legislation, and it's something everyone needs to be aware of.
