Recruiter Gives Support For Women in IT

Thursday, 27 July 2006

GCS announced this week its sponsorship of the ’Women in IT Award’ in the British Computer Society’s (BCS) 2006 IT Professional Awards. The award, now in its third year, aims to encourage more women to enjoy a career in IT and gives publicity for companies that have enhanced opportunities for women in IT departments. Chris Bartlett, MD of GCS, confirmed ’We wholeheartedly endorse the reward of ’merit’ in the workplace regardless of gender and are delighted to encourage the efforts of organisations in enhancing opportunities for women. GCS is proud to have a 50/50 ratio of men and women in its own workforce. Last financial year we achieved record results and we would like to ’put something’ extra back into the industry that we work with. Supporting the BCS with the ’GCS Women in IT Award’ is one of the ways that we will be doing this.’ Professor Wendy Hall, chair of the BCS Women’s Forum, says: “The number of women working in IT is falling with women accounting for less than 20% of the IT workforce today despite the fact that girls do better than boys at ‘A’ level in IT related subjects. We hope this award will help to turn the tide and encourage more women to consider IT as a career as well as help businesses recognise the importance of their female employees.”
